The Department of Dactyloscopy and Identification/(Fingerprint Department) conducts the following forensic examinations and expert evaluations:

1. DETECTION AND FORENSIC EXAMINATION OF FINGER MARKS
Finger mark detection implies visualisation and enhancement of finger marks on porous and non porous surfaces using optical, chemical and physical methods on the items seized from the crime scene or in connection with the crime scene.

Dactyloscopic expertise comprises the examination and assessment of the usability of finger marks, as well as the comparison of finger marks with the submitted reference fingerprints of known persons and suspects. Following the completion of the dactyloscopic examination, all unidentified finger marks are searched in ABIS, i.e. the Automated Biometric Identification System. The ABIS search involves the comparison of digitised finger marks with digitised fingerprints, as well as with finger marks and mugshots stored in the Fingerprint and Mugshot Database.

2. PERSON IDENTIFICATION
Dactyloscopic expertise for the purpose of personal identification comprises the determination of the identity of living individuals as well as human remains based on their fingerprints. Within the scope of dactyloscopic fingerprint examination, ABIS checks and forensic evaluations of submitted fingerprints are also conducted using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).
Within the scope of Dactyloscopic expertise, identity checks and determinations based on submitted fingerprints are also conducted in cooperation with international law enforcement agencies (Interpol, Europol, Sirene, etc.).

3. FINGERPRINT AND MUGSHOT DATABASE
In addition to the detection of finger marks, dactyloscopic forensic examination, and personal identification, the Department of Dactyloscopy and Identification performs the following tasks: processing, entry, and management of the Fingerprint and Mugshot Database.
An integral part of the Database is the archive of unidentified and identified finger marks. The Fingerprint and Mugshot Database is maintained both in physical files and in digital form within ABIS (Automated Biometric Identification System).

4. BIOMETRIC FACIAL IDENTIFICATION
A method of person identification based on a concrete comparison of questioned and non-questioned photographic images of facial characteristics. The source of the questioned facial images may be an original video recording or a photograph. For a valid comparison, it is essential to possess uncontested reference material of the specific individual, showing facial characteristics recorded under the same angle as in the questioned material.
