The Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) was implemented in the Centre at the beginning of February 2020 as a replacement for the previously implemented Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). The application is a product of the French corporation IDEMIA and is named MBIS (Morpho Biometric Identification System). ABIS contains two primary databases: tenprint database (database of fingerprint and palm print ridge patterns) as well as mugshots database, and a database of identified and unidentified fingerprint marks.

ABIS enables the entry (digitalization) of tenprints (fingerprint and palm print ridge patterns) of individuals, mugshots, and fingerprint marks, as well as their verification against the existing database of digitalized tenprints, mugshots and fingerprint marks.

Through the ABIS system, the following types of searches are performed:
  • tenprint and mugshots - against the existing tenprint database
  • tenprint  - against the existing database of fingerprint marks
  • fingerprint marks - against the existing tenprint database
  • fingerprint marks - against the existing database of fingerprint marks
  • mugshots - against the existing mugshot database

Five (5) remote ABIS working stations are connected to the central ABIS server, located at the headquarters of the following police administrations: zagrebačka, osiječko-baranjska, primorsko-goranska, istarska, and splitsko-dalmatinska. In these police administrations, professionally trained senior forensic technicians enter and verify fingerprint marks daily (found at or related to crime scenes within their jurisdictions) through ABIS.
